Oral Surgery - VittoMD

Tooth extraction is a routine dental procedure to remove a tooth due to decay, overcrowding, or infection.

A local anesthetic is applied to numb the area, ensuring a painless process. The dentist then loosens and removes the tooth using specialized tools. After the extraction, mild swelling or tenderness may occur, manageable with pain relievers and ice packs. Following aftercare instructions is key to healing and avoiding complications.

More about this Procedure

What types of oral surgery does VittoMD perform?

Our dental team performs a wide range of oral surgical procedures including tooth extractions (including wisdom teeth), dental implant placement, bone grafting, gum surgery, and treatment of oral pathologies. Each procedure is performed with the highest standards of care using advanced techniques and anesthesia options for your comfort.

What anesthesia options are available for oral surgery?

We offer local anesthesia for minor procedures, as well as IV sedation and general anesthesia for more complex surgeries or anxious patients. Our team will discuss all anesthesia options with you during your consultation so you can choose the level of comfort that is right for your procedure and preferences.

How long is recovery from oral surgery?

Recovery time varies by procedure. Simple extractions heal within 3 to 5 days. More complex surgeries like wisdom tooth removal or implant placement may require 1 to 2 weeks for initial healing, with complete bone and tissue healing taking several months. We provide detailed post-operative instructions to support a smooth recovery.

What should I eat after oral surgery?

For the first 24 to 48 hours, stick to soft, cool foods like yogurt, smoothies, mashed potatoes, and scrambled eggs. Avoid hot foods, hard or crunchy foods, and straws (which can dislodge blood clots). Gradually reintroduce your normal diet over 1 to 2 weeks as healing progresses.

How do I prevent dry socket after a tooth extraction?

Dry socket occurs when the protective blood clot in the extraction socket is dislodged. To prevent it: avoid smoking for at least 72 hours, do not use straws, avoid vigorous rinsing for the first 24 hours, and follow all post-operative instructions carefully. If you experience severe pain 3 to 5 days after extraction, contact our office immediately as dry socket is treatable.
