Deep Cleaning in Miami, FL

Deep Cleaning - VittoMD

Deep cleaning, or scaling and root planing, is a dental procedure used to treat periodontal disease by removing plaque and tartar from above and below the gumline. This helps prevent tooth loss and bone deterioration caused by untreated gum infections.

During deep cleaning, plaque and tartar are carefully removed from above and below the gumline to treat gum disease. Scaling eliminates buildup from tooth surfaces and roots, reducing inflammation and helping gums reattach. Root planing smooths the tooth roots to prevent future bacterial buildup. This procedure is often recommended for patients with swollen gums, bleeding, or persistent bad breath.

More about this Procedure

What is the difference between a regular cleaning and a deep cleaning?

A regular cleaning (prophylaxis) removes plaque and tartar from above and just below the gumline and is performed every 6 months for healthy patients. Deep cleaning (scaling and root planing) treats active gum disease by removing bacterial deposits from below the gumline and smoothing root surfaces to prevent bacteria from reattaching. It typically requires two visits and may involve local anesthesia.

Is deep cleaning painful?

Deep cleaning is performed with local anesthesia to minimize discomfort. You may feel pressure during the procedure but should not experience sharp pain. After the anesthesia wears off, some patients experience gum tenderness and sensitivity for 1 to 3 days, which resolves with proper care.

How long does a deep cleaning take?

A full-mouth deep cleaning is typically divided into two appointments, treating one half of the mouth per visit. Each session takes approximately 45 to 90 minutes. This phased approach allows for proper healing and keeps each session comfortable for the patient.

What happens after deep cleaning treatment?

After deep cleaning, we schedule a follow-up evaluation in 4 to 6 weeks to assess gum healing and measure pocket depth reduction. Most patients transition to a periodontal maintenance schedule of cleanings every 3 to 4 months instead of the standard 6 months to prevent disease recurrence.

Will deep cleaning cure my gum disease?

Deep cleaning is the most effective non-surgical treatment for moderate to severe gum disease and can halt its progression when combined with improved home care. While it cannot reverse bone loss that has already occurred, it dramatically reduces inflammation, pocket depth, and bacterial load. Consistent maintenance appointments are essential to prevent recurrence.
